Appcelerator Titanium is a new open source platform that enables developers to build Rich Internet Applications (RIA), distributed under Apache Public License and compatible with Windows and Mac OS operating systems. It is based on many modern technologies like WebKit, Google Gears and Chromium.

The benefits of Titanium platform are explained by Jeff Haynie, CEO of Appcelerator in a statement: ”Titanium enables a whole new generation of applications that use standard Web technologies to build rich desktop and mobile applications, which will ultimately push the boundaries of innovation. By providing an open source alternative, Titanium offers a solution for those who prefer open source for strategic reasons or want to extend the functionality of the Titanium platform to meet unique requirements.”

Titanium allows the creation of Rich Internet Applications capable to run in the web browsers, as well as from any desktop and mobile device by interacting directly with the operating system. As a consequence, the desktop web applications are able to run online or offline.

Titanium, as compared with any other RIA development platform permits the usage of standard Web programming languages, such as HTML, JavaScript and CSS. In the same time, the role of Titanium is to bring the web based experience at the desktop level by offering the following main features: decreased time of applications development, native windowing, direct access to the file system, database integration capabilities and many more.

The native applications can be distributed easily as packages containing an automatic installer which simplifies their deployment at the desktop level. The source code of working examples and the Titanium platform are available for free download at the Appcelerator, Inc. official website.
